The severely ill children of Moldova need help. Right now.

Third part. Ivan.

Ivan is almost not a child anymore. He is already 15 years old, and he spent 13 of these years in bed, without being able to move by himself. He lives with his mother, in a village near Ungheni. He is a fighter from birth. Since then, he is fighting a severe disease. Arthrogryposis is a very difficult disease to handle. It attacks joints and muscles. Ivan has the hardest form of arthrogryposis, when both arms, both legs and spine column are affected.

Being a teenager is usually about rebellion, going against all rules. All we want is to break free and have love. Ivan is not a rebel. He is fighting the limits of his own body. His body only allows him to stand up and to walk 2 hours per day. He fought for these 2 hours of freedom for a very long time. After multiple investigations, tests, surgery and long recovery – he won his right to this partial freedom

All the other time, he is in bed. 22 hours per day. He does not waste his time. He learns the school program. He has Internet access, friends and many thoughts. He must go through an additional surgery. A metallic construction must be placed into his spinal column. This should stop an advancing scoliosis. Of course, he has dreams and plans. He does not spell any of them out loud. He prefers to make small, hard but firm steps so that one day these dreams become true.

The costs for all the surgery, treatments and recovery are unbearable for Inna, Ivan’s mother. She is a simple, but an incredibly strong woman. For 15 years already, she is fighting to give her son a normal life.
